Professional chef ꞏ Ceramist ꞏ Author ꞏ Triathlete
Fondly known as the Ironman Chef, Heman Tan is a man of many talents. In addition to having more than 39 years of culinary experience as a celebrated professional chef, he is also an accomplished ceramist, as well as a competitive triathlete and Facebook.com marathoner. In addition, he is a prolific author, having published seven books thus far. Such diverse abilities underscore his determination and creativity, which serve him well, especially in the ultra-competitive F&B industry.
As the General Manager and Chef, Co-founder For Jas Prestige Group. Chef Heman has come a long way from his early days working as an R&D chef at Prima Foods. He once owned and helmed two restaurants, Iron Supper Club and Moonbow, and brought valuable expertise to his roles as Group Executive Chef of JP Pepperdine Group and Chief Culinary Officer of the Soup Restaurant Group . He has also gained extensive experience in the catering industry, overseeing preparations for as many as a few thousand meals a day when he was with ISS Catering (Singapore) and JR Foodstuff industries.
With extensive knowledge of American, European and Asian cuisine, Chef Heman is renowned for crafting unique menus that integrate his ‘East meets West’ knowledge. His background in ceramics, as the last student of the late Dr Ng Eng Teng, has earned him distinction as the only celebrity chef who serves his cuisine on ceramic wares he personally shapes and fires. An award-winning ceramist, his works have been showcased at the Singapore Sculpture Square and The Arts House.
Constantly looking for ways to push his limits, Chef Heman participates actively in culinary challenges, leading teams as the team captain and team manager to represent Singapore in international culinary competitions. He has also been featured in various culinary programs and demonstrations organized by big industry players like Nestle Professional, California Raisins, Singapore Food Festival, 50 Plus Healthy Living, Asian Masters, and the Health Promotion Board. Being a competitive sportsman, Chef Heman understands the need for healthy eating and has obtained a Certificate of Nutrition and Diet (Healthy Eating Principles) under the Fitness Australia Accredited Program. He put this unique knowledge to good use when he planned low GI meals for La-vie performers (RWS), and healthy meals for international players of The Singapore Sports School and The Singapore Health Promotion Board. He was also involved in meal preparation for the international athletes at the 3rd ASEAN School Games.
Chef Heman is a champion for CSR work and he reaches out to the needy through his expertise in culinary and ceramic arts. Project IronRiceBowl is one such initiative that he has launched to arm the less privileged community with skills that they can learn to help themselves.
In addition, Chef Heman is a former Executive Committee member of the Singapore Chef’s Association where he headed the Association’s Social Activities & Sports Committee and held roles such as Memberships & Ex-Treasurer in the Association. He is also a member of the International Association of Gastronomy; Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, Sabre d’Or Singapore and a Certified Judge of the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS).
He has started a Facebook Page and launched a video series called “The Iron Man Chef” to offer not just culinary and health tips but also motivational lessons.
